–Maugris, The Golden Tower

Maugris was a Makar, who through the ages has inhabited the bodies of many other Makars in a strange form of immortality.[1] He is the only known Makar to conquer death, living for hundreds of years by pushing his soul into the bodies of other mages. This started when he was dying in his first life and pushed his soul into the body of Master Janusz, his teacher. After the Cold Massacre, he was critically injured and had to push his soul into the body of Callum Hunt, who was no more than a baby. To protect the body, he sealed off his memories.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Maugris was likely born in Europe(citation needed). He passed his Iron Trial and was selected by Master Janusz, a highly respected Makar. He became a Makar as well, and according to Janusz, he could have been one of the greatest Makars the world had ever known. He did many laboratory experiments with his master, but he never used a counterweight. Eventually, the void took its toll on him, and before he could complete his training, he fell seriously ill.

Illness and "Death"[]

After coughing up blood, Maugris' condition rapidly deteriorated until he felt like a prisoner in his own home. Even the best earth mages of the era were unable to heal him, and his death seemed inevitable. However, when Master Janusz came over to tend to him towards the end, Maugris had an epiphany and figured out how to push the master's soul out of his body and his own into it. Master Janusz then died in Maugris' body.

Possessions[]

After killing Master Janusz, he continued to take the bodies and identities of other makars as a method of obtaining immortality. During this period, he possessed Ludmilla of Prague, who sent a plague of beetles after the men of her city after one of them divorced her friend, and the Hooded Kestrel, who was known for using chaos magic to churn up the guts of his victims. As Ludmilla, he appears to have beaten all or part of the European Assembly[1]. It is likely that he was responsible for the European ban on Makars[2]. At some point, he managed to meet and defeat a Devoured of chaos.

At an unspecified time, he moved to America and eventually took the body of the woman who would become Joseph's master, although no one ever knew she was a Makar. He used this position of power to manipulate Joseph into being interested in chaos magic, and Joseph later went on to manipulate Constantine Madden into becoming the Enemy of Death. Some time after Constantine left the Magisterium, discovered the chaos-ridden, and started trying to resurrect Jericho, Maugris took his body and identity. He continued much of Constantine's work, but abandoned trying to resurrect Jericho.

At the end of the Third Mage War, during the Cold Massacre, Constantine's body was fatally wounded. While he had always used the bodies of other Makars in the past, he was forced to take the body of Callum Hunt, who was just a baby at the time. To prevent Callum's mind from shutting down due to overload, Maugris sealed his memories away with the expectation that he would find out how to unlock them when he was powerful enough.

Life as Callum Hunt[]

Main article: Callum Hunt

Call lived his life unaware of Maugris, and after encountering Master Joseph, believed that the Makar who had taken his body was Constantine[3]. He only found out about the existence of Maugris during his Gold Year, when Aaron Stewart broke the barrier in Call's mind that was hiding the memories. This sent Call into a delusional state for several days as he attempted to process all of them, believing that he was different people living in different times. With the help of Aaron and Tamara Rajavi, he was able to return to himself, understanding Maugris' memories but not being overwhelmed by them. He was able to use this information to defeat Alex Strike and put Aaron in his body. To justify their actions, Call and his friends had to pass through the Gate of Balance, proving that they intended to do good in the world despite Maugris' past.
