Aaron looked miserable. “Well, we're not going to get anywhere tonight, he said. “It's late and we're all tired. Maybe if we sleep for a couple of hours, we can figure something out in the morning.

Callum Hunt has been staying with Alastair in their home in North Carolina for the summer break, and things have been awkward. He now knows that Constantine's soul is inside him—that he could be Constantine—and he also knows that Alastair suspects this, though the latter does not say it. Alastair also does not like Call's Chaos-ridden pet, Havoc. One evening, Alastair invites Call to see a movie, much to his surprise. He agrees, but Havoc must be left behind, so Call ties Havoc up in their garage. When they return, Call finds Havoc missing. He and Alastair drive around twon calling out to Havoc, to no avail.

They looked at the two beds. Each was about big enough for one adult or two kids.
+
Call briefly has a miserable, restless night's sleep when he is awakened by a whining. He follows a feeling and finds Havoc chained up in a room in his father's cellar. In the room, he also sees a cot and shackles—just the right size for him. Call sees notes on the desk about a ritual—which requires a copper gauntlet and a Chaos-ridden's beating heart—that could take out the chaos magic from a Makar, which would also kill and destroy them. Call immediately assumes that Alastair will try the ritual on him to confirm his fears.

"I call that one," said Jasper. He pointed at Tamara and Call. "And I call Aaron, because you're creepy and you're a girl."
+
When Alastair arrives, Call confronts him about it. In a fit of rage, Call ends up attacking Alastair with magic and knocks him unconscious. Call, who had already decided that he will leave with Havoc, packs up his bags and takes some money lying around and leaves the house. Quickly deciding that he will go to Tamara's home in Arlington, he goes straight to the bus station and, posing as an 18-year-old, buys a ticket, using up all his money for the ride.

"I can sleep on the floor," Aaron offered, looking at the expression on Tamara's face.
+
Once there, he takes a cab to Tamara's house, called the Gables which is well-known among the locals due to its extravagance. There, the butler almost didn't let Call enter, but he ran past him and almost caused a scene until Tamara herself arrived and vouched for him. Call arrives on a day when Tamara's parents, both Assembly members, were throwing a party and finds Jasper deWinter in attendance, as well as Aaron Stewart, whom Call just finds out has been staying with the Rajavis all summer. He also sees Alex Strike, who has been staying over because he was dating Tamara's sister, Kimiya. The Rajavis allow Call to stay with them for the rest of the break.

"That doesn't help anyone but Jasper," said Tamara crossly, and got onto the leftmost bed. "It's fine, Call; we'll just sleep on top of the covers. Don't worry about it."
+
Once summer break was over, the kids happily head back to the Magisterium. Once there, the trio go to the library to learn more about the Alkahest, which they had overheard someone talk about at the party, saying someone had tried to steal it and that it would put Aaron, the Makar, in danger. It has since worried the boy, who has been feeling the pressure and weight of his responsibilities since. Soon, Alastair comes to the Magisterium and asks Rufus if he could talk to Call; Call refuses in fear and has him sent away.

Call thought that maybe he should offer to sleep on the floor like Aaron had, but he didn't want to. His leg already hurt and, besides, he knew for a fact that there were sometimes rats hiding in the barn.
+
Some time after, Call, remembering the notes in their cellar room, realizes that Alastair may have something to do with the failed attempt to steal the Alkahest. From a previous lecture given by Rufus, Call figures out that the Alkahest was moved from its display in the Collegium to a vault below the airplane hangar—which Alastair had a blueprint for. Call realized that Alastair wanted this move to happen because he was a good metal mage, and its new placement was in his favor.

"Okay," he said, climbing in gingerly beside her.
+
This bothers Call the following day—so much that both Tamara and Aaron become worried and confront him about it. Finally, Call tells them about Alastair, telling them the things he could without bringing up what he believes is his father's ulterior motives. Tamara, however, fears for Aaron's safety and tells Rufus, despite promising Call that she will keep whatever he will admit to them a secret. Call becomes furious at Tamara for this, driving a wedge in their friendship.

It was weird.
+
Shortly after, Alex comes to Call and tells him that now that the Alkahest had been stolen, presumably by Alastair, the Assembly has decided that the search for Alastair will be a hunt: they will kill him for the gauntlet. Deeply concerned, Call decides to go after him with Havoc somehow to warn him. However, he is caught by Tamara and Aaron before he could leave, and they insist on tagging along. When they are caught sneaking out by Jasper, they take him with them to prevent him from telling.

In the other bed, Jasper and Aaron were trying to share a single pillow. There was a muffled cry as someone was punched. Call pushed the pillow on his bed over to Tamara, and laid his head down on his crooked arm.

He closed his eyes, but sleep didn't come. It was uncomfortable trying to keep to one side of the bed, making sure that even his toes didn't stray over to Tamara's side. It didn't help that he kept seeing the words in the letters Master Joseph had written, painted on the backs of his eyelids.

"Call?"

He opened his eyes. Tamara was looking at him from a few inches away, her eyes big and dark. "Why are you so important?" she whispered.

He felt the warm gust of her breath on his cheek.

"Important?" he echoed. Jasper had started to snore.

"All those letters," she said. "From Master Joseph. I thought they'd be about Aaron. He's the Makar. But they were all about you. Call is the most important thing.”

"I mean …I guess because he's my dad," Call said, floundering. "So I'd be important to him."

"It didn't sound like that kind of important," Tamara said softly. "Call, you know, you can tell us anything, right?"

Call wasn't sure how to answer her. He was still trying to decide when Havoc began to howl.

"Jasper!" Call yelled, waving his hand around frantically. "Hey, Jasper!"

Jasper looked over at him and his eyes widened. He headed toward Call. He was carrying a glass of fruit punch in which chunks of real fruit floated. Call had never been so relieved to see anyone. He started reconsidering all the bad things he’d ever thought about Jasper. Jasper was a hero.

"Mr. DeWinter," said the waiter. "Do you know this boy?"

Jasper took a sip of punch, his brown eyes traveling up and down Call, from his tangled hair to his dirty sneakers.

"Never seen him before in my life," he said.

Call's positive feelings about Jasper evaporated in a whoosh. "Jasper, you liar —"

THE FIRST SIGHT of the highway made Call shudder as he remembered the last time he’d crossed it, looking for Aaron. He recalled vividly the pain in his legs as he forced himself to hurry, the panic at the thought of Aaron in danger, and then the discovery that he wasn’t the person he’d always thought himself to be.

Jasper squatted and petted Havoc's head when the wolf came up to him. For a moment, he didn’t seem like such a jerk.

Then he saw Call looking and glared.

Call sat down on the ground, watching the occasional car whirr by. Tamara was typing things into her phone. He wasn’t sure if she was researching stuff for their quest or just e-mailing friends from home. Aaron frowned thoughtfully into the middle distance, the way heroes in comic books did. They could make a figurine of him looking like that.

Call wondered how Aaron would look when he found out that Call had lied to him — lied to him a lot.

<big>Teaser #5</big>

Call drove, with Tamara acting as copilot while Jasper and Aaron pillowed their heads on Havoc's furry back and napped. Jasper must have been pretty exhausted to deign to sleep on a Chaos-ridden animal. Hours passed like this.

"You know you can get arrested for going under the speed limit, too," said Tamara, her warm ginger ale in the cupholder beside her. She was unbraiding her hair, brushing it out as it blew around with the breeze of her open window. Tamara almost always kept her hair in braids, and Call was surprised by how long it was unbraided, black and shiny and hanging to her waist.

Call pressed his foot harder on the gas and the Morris lurched forward. As the speedometer needle started to edge up, the car began to shudder.

<big>Teaser #6</big>

"Let's kill him," Call said.

Havoc growled.

"Master Rufus?" Aaron looked alarmed.

"No, of course not Master Rufus! I meant Jasper," Call said. "Bury his body under a pile of rock. Who'd know?"

"Call, stop being ridiculous," said Tamara.

"Havoc could kill him," Call suggested. Havoc turned at the sound of his name, looking interested by the prospect. Although the Chaos-ridden wolf had grown over the summer, Call wasn't sure he could actually kill anyone, but he could sure take Jasper outside and chase him around the Magisterium a few times.

"And I'm supposed to be the psychopath?" Jasper grumbled.

Call wasn't sure what it meant that he'd gone full Evil Overlord on Jasper but still couldn't manage to impress him.

Aaron raised his hand. For a moment Call thought that Aaron was going to settle them down, say that Call should quit threatening Jasper and they should all just go back to their rooms. Instead, black fire sparked between Aaron's fingers, a web of darkness. "Don't make me hurt you," he said, looking right at Jasper, chaos burning in the palm of his hand. "Because I really could."
